Summary Robots (2015)

Some gosh darn robots do in robot things

Synopsis Robots (2015)

Today's robots are nothing short of astonishing; those coming in the not-too-distant future are simply revolutionary...and they are becoming eerily like us. What does it really take to make a humanoid robot - a robot that can do anything we can do without the benefit of a human brain? How close are scientists to replicating some of our particularly challenging human characteristics? (HINT: Think fingers and toes!) Why are we even attempting to create humanoids in the first place? And how might they already be changing our world? ROBOTS, an immersive new giant-screen film experience from National Geographic Studios, which gives audiences an inside look at just how hard it is to mimic what we humans can do, as well as what it means to be humanoid. In ROBOTS, host and narrator RoboThespian, a humanoid robot voiced by actor, comedian and filmmaker Simon Pegg ("Star Trek"; "Mission Impossible"; "Shaun of the Dead"), takes audiences on a lively tour of the world to meet a dozen of the most remarkable robots in Europe, Japan and the U.S. From Robonaut, the first space robot handyman, to robot butlers and home helper humanoids to eerily human-looking androids to remarkable rescue robots, the film showcases the latest cutting edge efforts-as well as the challenges-driving roboticists, engineers and scientists around the globe to new break throughs. Directed by Mike Slee ("Flight of the Butterflies"; "Bugs!") and produced by Jini Dürr ("Mysteries of the Unseen World"; "Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure"), ROBOTS provides rare access to labs where researchers are putting the robots through their paces, striving to replicate human capabilities such as mobility, locomotion and dexterity by using sensory data and visual perception. Getting a machine to move or think like a human, or to sense, plan and act, is no easy feat. ROBOTS explores the latest in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, humanoid cognition and human - robot interaction (HRI), as well as exciting developments in cloud robotics. The 40-minute large format film also travels to the DARPA Robotics Challenge, the intense two-day competition to test how all-purpose rescue robots might deal with disasters. "ROBOTS not only gives remarkable insight into what is currently going on in robotics labs around the world and the extraordinary leaps that have been made in the field, but also highlights the complexities of human ability," said producer Jini Dürr ROBOTS 3D answers these questions and more as it showcases the latest developments - the successes and failures - of robotics around the world. It's a fascinating, fun sneak peak into the future at what might be possible as scientists use innovative engineering and design to make cyber characters less "humanoid" and more just plain human.

With Robo-Thespian as a guide, the film highlights the featured aptitudes of each robot. Audiences will meet humanoid robots such as "HRP - 2," designed to study locomotion, and watch this bi-pedal bot crawl and walk; "ASIMO," Honda's famed humanoid that can jump and run up to 5 m.p.h.; "ATLAS," a 6-foot, 330-pound search and rescue robot that can navigate rough terrain; "COMAN," a small headless wonder with the flexible joints; "HERB THE BUTLER" and "PR-2," who perform tasks that could make them vital home helper robots one day; "ROBONAUT," NASA's space handyman who helps astronauts aboard the International Space Station; "CHIMP," who "sees" by using laser light; "JUSTIN" a ball - catching 'bot; "iCUB," an adorable robot designed to look and learn like a child and "NAO," another small robot loved by kids everywhere; and an array of incredibly life-like android robots. ROBOTS gives audiences a fascinating and exciting look at what makes us human, how far machines must really go to look and act like us, and how humanoids are already changing our world .and how humanoids are already changing our world
