Ben Matlock is hired to defend a police officer who has been framed for murder by Police Captain Edward Hanna, a police-force veteran.

Synopsis The Captain ()

One of Ben Matlock's oldest friends, Atlanta Police Captain Edward Hanna, who had lost his wife to murder, is killing criminal defendants whose court cases have been dismissed due to unconstitutional procedures carried out by Captain Hannah. Police Officer Shanley noticed the trend and made a list of five defendants who had been murdered. He approaches Captain Hannah and tells him he is investigating the killings, that he suspects Captain Hannah,and urges him to retire, which Captain Hannah refuses to do. Captain Hannah kills Officer Shanley and frames Officer Jerry Reese who goes on trial for Shanley's death. Ben faces the difficult situation of defending his client by proving that his old friend, Captain Hannah, is the killer.
